Air breathers are usefull to avoid water in your dieseltanks. Every time you take fuel out of the tank, the same amount of (moist) air enters the same tank. that water will condensate on the tank roof, and then drip into the fuel. Water in fuel causes injector erosion, fuel degradation and the growth of micro-organism. Air breathers need to be placed on a small piping set with a bypass for when the tank is filled.
